The 3rd Bagasbas Summer Surf Festival, Bagasbas Beach, Daet, Camarines Norte

The event:

The 3rd Bagasbas Summer Surf Festival, Bagasbas Beach, Daet, Camarines Norte

The date:

April 9-11, 2010. Registration starts 8am

What this is all about:

Surf Clinics!

Have your first taste of surfing, that incomparable feel of walking on water, and it will get you stoked! You’ll be clamoring for more after this… one session will never be enough !

Upon registration, you will be given a time slot for your session. Hold on to it, check-in at your hotel, change and head to the beach. While waiting for your slot, the beach activities are guaranteed to keep you pumped with beach adrenaline!

Sport Climbing

Check out the National Climbing Competition or… go face to face yourself with the climbing wall! The country’s best climbers are flocking from all over the Philippines to join the Sport Climbing Association of the Philippines’ National Selections. If you want to be inspired, then this is it.

If you want to check out how inspired you are, then go over to the interactive side of the climbing wall and try the wall for yourself!

Contact SCAPi for more details: Crissie Malay 0915-9949004, Mackie Makinano 0927-7385492

Beach Ultimate Frisbee

Dive into the sand or watch the pro’s do it! Ultimate Frisbee's passionate club Sunken Pleasure will be holding a special invitational tournament for the top teams in Ultimate Frisbee. Catch high flying action on the beach, and better yet, learn the skills as the pros hold clinics on the beach… FOR YOU. It’s not hard to learn, and before the week end is over, you’ll be joined up with other newbies for a special starter’s game.

Contact Cherry Sy for more details: 0921-2956525

Beach Volleyball

Dig and dig as the spikes force you to get down into the sand! Beach volleyball needs no intro, as one of the classic beach sports since the 80’s. My suggestion, form a team while it’s early, call the assigned coordinator from Progressive Volleyball Center below and assure yourselves of a slot before they run out!

Clinics to learn the sport? Yes we will hold them if the 2 courts won’t be filled with competitive games.

Contact Ariel Joaquin for more details : 0917-5315849

FAQ’s on Bagasbas Beach:

How do we get there? Which is better, to take a public transporation or take our own cars? Frankly, we feel it's too long for a drive and we'd rather sit back and relax. Is there a public transpo mode that we can take from Manila? If so, where and how much would this cost? Other suggestions for transportation?

The best way to Daet, Camarines Norte is by bus.

I always take Superlines, with the terminal at Cubao along EDSA, southbound between Times and Aurora Boulevard. The trip is 6 hours minimum, but the bus ride of Superlines has A LOT OF STOPS. The buses aren't new, but the fare is cheaper (P490 aircon) than the posh Philtranco, with terminals in Pasay and Cubao newer buses with the highest fares at P650 (Gold Service, check out the toilet facilities on board the bus)

For Superlines, there are only 2 trips 9:00pm and 9:30pm. Both trips reach Daet at around 6am. ( this is best for the event, so you get to check in and reg early on Day 1 ). TRAVEL TIP: reserve and purchase seats a day before or in the morning of your trip to avoid running out of seats.

Call Philtranco for their scheds for more details. They leave at 9pm as well, and don't stop much, thus arriving in Daet at 4am. So I usually don't take them so i don't have to check in <>

PHILTRANCO - cubao (02)722-7567, pasay (02) 851-5420,daet (054)721-4350

SUPERLINES - daet (054) 571-2225, cubao(02)414-3319

When you get to Daet, tell the tricycle drivers to take you to Bagasbas Beach. That should be P50 for the trike, special trip, you can load the trike up to 3 pax

If you want to drive, prepare for a 370km road trip :)

> print out the map from google map
> Compute your gas. the crucial gas station is in Gumaca Quezon, before the zig zags
> I strongly suggest a driving buddy, or 3 of you to split the drive

I need a list of places where we can book accommodations.

Where exactly is the registration and event site?

The event is at Bagasbas Beach, Daet, Camarines Norte. The registration will be at the beach.

I want to camp to save on lodging. What kind of crowd would you think will be coming?

A lot of students and yuppies. A big market of this event are the college kids on summer break. The local government will provide a secured area for campers, with access to toilet facilities and fresh water. There will be minimal cost though for use of toilet and shower.

What kind of entertainment will there be at night time? Any bands that we know?

Irene of Lady I has now come up with her own sound of maybe the coolest Reggae Dub you'll hear in this land... 16,000 kilometers from Kingston Town Jamaica. Lady I plays on April 9.

Coffee Break Island has clearly been a steady mover in the area of beach music, singing happy tunes leaning towards up beat reggae and ska. They have partnered with us in the promotion of our local beaches and mountain crags since early 2000, sometime initiating efforts to bring the crowd together, if only to celebrate the freedom of the spirit found in the outdoors enthusiasts. CBI plays on April 10.

What are the costs to expect?

Reg P500
Food for 2 days (lot of carinderia and restaurant choices there or bring your own baon)
Lodging, depending on your booking (free if you want to camp)
Transpo by bus P980 round trip ( on Superlines )

How long/ short do you estimate the surfing lesson ie, 1 hour?

30 minutes, 45 minutes if less than the expected people register

For those who want to try the sport climbing, do we need to bring anything? socks?

No, the holds will be big, flip flops will be ok, or even barefoot :)

Or is this a bit different from indoor rock climbing in the sense that shoes are not needed?

Yup, thats the same thing

Frisbee clinics will be ongoing the whole day as well?

Yes, Fiday is all day clinics. its easy to learn. If you get the hang of it, and you want to join fun tournaments or scrimmages, we can hook you up with others for sunday

Coming from Mindanao and Visayas, what's the best way to get to Daet?

Option 1: Fly to Manila then bus down to Camarines Norte

Option 2: Take Philtranco, farthest station is Davao, passing through Tacloban. Get off at Naga, connect to Daet

How can I visit Calaguas Island after the event?

Contact Melvic Brinas 0909-2944444, 09065144444, 09222472111 from the Tourism Office

Can I pass this email on to my friends?

YES!!! Feel free to re post this email onto your egroups!

Who is spearheading this event?

The Provincial Government of Camarines Norte: 054 7213087

Power Play Events Management: bagasbas.summer.surf.festival@gmail.com

This event is presented by The Province of Camarines Norte, The Department of Tourism OPRD, DOT Region 5, and MOJO Slippers and Sandals.

MAHABANG BUHANGIN, CALAGUAS ISLAND

This particular destination is actually far from Daet, the capital town of Camarines Norte. In fact, lots of travelers get confused when they start planning a trip to this place.

For the uninitiated, the place called Calaguas is actually located in the northern part of the
municipality of Vinzons. Mahabang Buhangin, the Boracay of the Bicol Region is actually located in a group of islands called the Calaguas Group of Islands.

Mahabang Buhangin is known for the finest white sand ever. It holds great promises for people in search of adventure and satisfactory vacation spots. One can do island-hopping and can spend hours without end in white sand beaches or snorkeling in the clear waters of this tiny piece of paradise. The island also hosts some of the most impressive limestones and cliffs.

This itinerary is most appropriate for people who can spend two whole days in the area.

By Bus

Day 1

8:00p.m. Depart Manila by Bus

The Bus schedule is one of the best things in traveling to Daet. It usually leaves Manila at around 8:00p.m. every day but the exact time of departure is changing, depending on what bus is used, after a 7-9 hour travel, it arrives at around 5:00 a.m. in the town of Daet.

Day 2

5:00 A.M. Arrive Daet

Take tricycle to an inn or hotel (optional to those who would want to rest)
Breakfast

7:00 A.M. Start discovery of Calaguas

Ride a hired jeepney going to the town of Vinzons, from the town port hire a boat make a stop over in this island:

Quinamanukan Island

This is a short stretch of semi-white sand beach and a fish sanctuary. Definitely ideal for swimming and snorkeling. one can stay here for a picnic lunch while island-hopping.

Must have packed lunch

12:00 P.M. Arrival in Calaguas Group of Island particularly in Barangay Mangcawayan, Mahabang Buhangin, Vinzons. Set up camp, explore the island.

3:00 P.M. Trek to a hill and wait for sunset.

With seemingly unending limestone formations, you can have a combination of unscheduled penitence and exhilarating vista of the seascape of the area. It’s definitely worth the effort!

6:00 P.M. Back to camp

Prepare for dinner

8:00 P.M. Socials at the Beach

Day 3

7:00 A.M. Breakfast

8:00 A.M. Snorkeling, and some other beach activities

10:00 A.M. Break Camp

11:00 Leave the island

1:00 P.M. Late Lunch in any restaurant in Daet

Souvenir shopping and explore the town

Around 8:00 P.M. Back to Manila

Day 4

4:00 a.m. or 7:00 a.m.- ETA Manila

On the trip back to Manila, Some seasoned travelers would already be wearing working clothes and be ready to get to their offices after disembarking from the Bus.

TRIP TO DAET

The town of Daet is actually a destination that you need to visit and not just pass by on your way to other parts of the Bicol Region. For one, since the Quirino Highway was built, most buses to the southern part of the country do not pass by Daet anymore to save at least 2 hours travel time. Thus, when you visit this province, traffic is already light. But expect long 1 ½ hours sharp curves and winding roads before reaching Daet. Better take that anti-dizziness pill. Travel time from Manila takes about seven hours by night bus.

With very little traffic and unexplored potential attractions that are at par with more popular ones in the Philippines visiting Daet can be an eye-opener for even seasoned travelers. But given a week-end of discovering the area, you can do the following activities here: swimming, learning to surf, snorkeling, island-hopping.

DAY 1

8:00 P.M. ETD Manila

DAY 2

5:00 A.M. ETA Daet

Take a tricycle to your preferred hotel and catch some rest

7:00 A.M. Breakfast

Hire a jeepney or a tricycle to Mercedes which is about 7 kilometers away from Daet.

Hire a boat to Apuao Grande

Apuao Grande used to be the premier tourists destination in the province where a classy resort was built. The resort is still there, though the operation has been drastically trimmed down. Aside from Apuao Grande, there are other smaller islands that one can visit. Stay for an hour for some swimming and snorkeling in one island then hop on the boat for another. Be sure to bring packed lunch.

3:00 P.M. Back to Mercedes town proper

Back to Daet

DAY 3

Whole A.M. Hire a jeepney to San Jose Beach in Talisay

Swimming, rolling with the waves for pro’s

This is a very long stretch of gray sand where the waves are most ideal for either surfing or adventure swimming, that is, waiting for a big wave then letting your body roll as the wave hits the beach. A word of caution: Don’t do this with the water level beyond your waistline. If you want to try learning how to surf, there are some local surfing dudes who rent out their surfboards and give you some quick lessons. For novice surfers the better place to find surfboards to rent and to learn surfing is in Bagasbas Beach.

P.M. Transfer to Bagasbas Beach in Daet

Continue Swimming

Bagasbas Beach gave Daet the distinct recognition as tourists destination. This is connected to San Jose Beach. Aside from water sports, numerous restaurants are established in the mini boulevard fronting the beach. Thus, you can have the time of your life watching the waves while sipping your favorite refreshment.

DAY 4

A.M. Hire Jeepney / Van to Paracale

If you know the term Paracale gold is familiar, then you canwould immediately determine that the shining stuff came from this place. Actually gold mining has been an established industry in the municipality of Paracale even before the Spaniards came here. Although the gold mining areas are diminishing, the gold industry is still a dominant livelihood activity of the people of Paracale. One can visit some houses to look at how they make intricate gold jewelry. Then on to the streetside shops to buy not so expensive gold pasalubong.

Back to Daet for lunch and pasalubong shopping or spend more time in Bagasbas for swimming and surfing lessons.

8:00 P.M. ETD Daet

DAY 5

4:00 A.M. ETA Manila

Tricycle Fare: 6.00 1st 3kms /head
